Swamp Victorious

Watercolor, Gouache & Colored Pencil on Wood Panel, 12" x 12"

This piece was created for Still Shining, a hurricane relief fundraiser at Creative Pinellas as part of their 2024 Arts Annual Exhibition. This show, sponsored by Visit St. Pete Clearwater, includes 25 Pinellas County artists and represents the spirit to overcome the hardship of the two hurricanes that impacted the area this year.

My inspiration for this piece is Nike, the goddess of victory from ancient Greek mythology. In this composition, she is descending to a grey swamp devastated by the storms, and bringing with her an atmosphere of resilience and renewal – victory over hardship – to represent the community’s indomitable spirit to endure and rebuild.

For this work, I decided to lift the figure 1/4″ off the background to give it greater dimension.
