Meatyard Soup Cans

Watercolor, Colored Pencil, Gouache on Wood Panels, 4" x 6"

Way back in May of 2020, during the pandemic, I created a piece for the Bon Appétit show at MIZE Gallery. Named “Oh Bröther,” this work was made to fit the assigned theme of soup and crackers.  I found inspiration for it in a few pop-culture references, including Andy Warhol’s iconic Campbell’s soup cans, which I re-interpreted for the piece’s background. Having created this soup can pattern, I ended up using it for a few other projects, so it never really went away.

When it came time to try out some new paint color combinations, I decided to re-create the soup cans on 4″ x 6″ panels, which just seemed like a fun side-project that I never really expected to do anything more with.

Color me surprised when the original 4 soup cans were so popular that I expanded the lineup to this set of 12 that ended up in a show at The Werk Gallery where they sold out completely.

This would not be the end of my journey with the soup cans, by any means.
